This was an enjoyable book, but not as good as the first one due to plot inconsistencies. There are many many times that Sherra could have killed the bad guy... But she doesn't. Also, I don't know if I have missed the point but why exactly do warriors pull from their escorts again? Escorts can produce fire and warriors can produce shields.... What on earth is the difference between the two anyway? Its not clearly explained at all....*SPOILERS*
Too many weird plot holes. Like why didn't Sherra kill Ruarke with her pistol-like shot or whatever instead of saving the 5 year old? This is slightly addresses in the book but makes no sense. She could have first 1. Headshot Ruarke 2. In confusion save girl...
Also what exactly is up with the reason why Sherra takes so long to come back to Az-ca? They literally say oh if I wait too long then Ruarke will find Merrin and sh*t will hit the fan.... Lets wait anyway to send her back. Like.... What??? Also, its not like Krysti's city and Az-ca is some magic places she can never travel between.... Idk. It's weird.

All in all, it was still a great book and i liked it. However, it would nice if the plot was tighter in the next installment

Fascinating series, Connie just keeps getting better. Love all of this series, can't wait for more. Characters stay with you even after you've finished the book. I always wish the stories were much, much longer.
Loved the first book. This is the second book in the series. Sadly I couldn't even finish it. I tried for about three weeks but kept switching to other books to read. For me it was just so slow and uneventful. Just lots of talking and planning but nothing happens. Disappointed.
Love this series! Sherra is showing more of what she can do and teaching the others so they all have a chance to survive. The only thing I don't like about Connie Shuttle books are the ending! She creates stories that capture you and you just want them to go on and on. I'll be rereading thus on soon to make sure I haven't miss anything. I recommend this series to everyone. It has everything you want in a series. Can't wait for book 3!!
Another fantastic book in this series! Like all of Connie's books, it keeps you wanting more and more. I can't wait for the next!
I liked the first book but this 2nd one feels like the author had to stretch the story to reach her reqd number of words! All those quibbles and unnecessary events! It's frankly irritating. I was expecting a really great sequel but what I got was someyhing I wished I never spent 2nights on. I skipped and skipped pages until I finally reached the last page.
It has taken me a while to review this book. I guess the rating is more of a 3.5. I reread the first book several times. I was highly anticipating the sequel, but it fell flat for me. There were a lot of different subplots happening, and it created a disconnect between our two main characters. There were silly disagreements that were not needed. I really felt that Karek was pushed aside when it would have been better if he had been involved or had the proper information. Still going to read the next one, but not anticipating it as much.
Good follow up to the first book. Our heroine continues to amaze us with her new powers and brilliant ideas.
Some of the arguments between the two main characters don't jell all that well and make Thorn look weak and insecure at times. The underlying story is good and the characters are reasonable but what stops this book from getting 5 stars from me is the way it is written. I could not fully engage with the characters as the writing style makes it feel like someone is telling you a story and this stops you from fully merging with the characters and feeling part of the book.
Good read for anyone who loves fantasy/adventure.
