Dr. Yoko Kamimura's safe, predictable routine as a behavioral optometrist at the College of Optometry in New York is shattering. When the stranger who comes up to Yoko on East 23rd Street and warns her of danger is shot to death, safe and predictable switches to murder and mayhem. The very next day, there's a catastrophe at the iconic National Arts Club and Yoko's grandmother is left in a coma after a vicious attack.
Frustrated by the dismissive attitude of Detective Dan Riley at the 13th Precinct, Yoko vows to turn sleuth, but work and bizarre events keep her scrambling. Not even a prestigious conference 3,000 miles away in England in the tranquil coastal city of Bournemouth and a visit to Christchurch's 11th- century priory are havens for Yoko.
Now she is in the killer's cross-hairs and the chase is on...in and around the Gramercy Park area, sometimes at No 34, New York's first coop building, sometimes at the abandoned Quaker Meeting House and eventually at the famous Pete's Tavern.

Eye Sleuth is intellectually and medically stimulating and murderously believable! It's also a clever way to explain a real therapy that can help millions but which most of us are unaware of. By slipping in explanations of vision therapy as part of the murder plot the reader can understand what is often considered an exotic medical condition but in reality is sadly only too common, especially among students. The detailed descriptions of New York and Bournamouth, UK, bring the reader onto their streets, and Yoko's musings are logical and fun to read. She's a true heroine. Reader-friendly and with fine illustrations at the top of each chapter, Eye Sleuth is a great beginning for this crime series.Product details

Eye Sleuth A Dr Yoko Mystery Book 1 edition by Hazel Dawkins Aggie Mitchkoski Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I didn't really know what to expect when I chose this book. I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy the character, Dr. Yoko. I learned some things about optometry that I never knew before and gained an appreciation for the science of optometry. I will definitely choose the next Dr. Yoko mystery that I find. It was worth my time to read!
Well written with a different plot. Recommended..I learned a lot about a profession I knew nothing about. Eye behaviorists is a very interesting field and who knew that having your eyes checked and wearing appropriate glasses can help children to learn better, etc., help with their behavior, etc. I don't what to give the information away that you will learn in this book, so read it for yourself.
Since I have had eye issues from early childhood, I was hooked immediately. The story was good and all the clues were there to support the conclusion.
Having pictures of the places was a master-stroke. Since I grew up in New York, I could visualize most scenes but the ones in England really helped. I also liked the added recipes to "add flavor"
Using true experts as characters was a master stroke.
I will be reading more by this author.
I knew nothing about Behavioral Optometry before reading this book. What a revelation. But it isn't a treatise or research paper; instead, it's an absorbing mystery in which a woman is murdered in the midst of warning another woman about something. What? That is what Yoko Kamimura, the warned, must find out.
Full of twists and turns, and lots of delicious sounding food, this is a great read! I have already gotten the number two book in the series!
I liked that the author includes pictures of the places introduced in the story and makes it easy to access them without losing ones place.
There were parts of the book where it lagged a bit and perhaps too much information sometimes. Even though her premise is fresh and filled with potential, Dawkins will ultimately need to restrain some of her passion for teaching and ramp up the suspense.
I am excited at the prospect of Dr. Yolo becoming a consultant to the police. I think it will give her more "teeth".
This field of working with visual problems ,using specialized instruments , that helped train the eyes, and correct behavioral problems , by trained optometrists, was very interesting. Throw in some bizarre "accidents", murder, romance and you have a good plot. Having already read the next book, it is a much spicier action book, so was much more enjoyable. I loved learning more about Gramarcy Park and the tunnels under New York. Yolo is a more rounded character in this one, a "fleshing out", so to speak.
Eye Sleuth (A Yoko Kamimura Mystery) is a well written and professionally edited mystery. It's also an interesting, educational , and fun read. The characters come through as real people. The descriptions and history of the New York Gramercy Park area combined with the lovely ink drawn illustrations topping each chapter added value to the story. The explanations of Vision Therapy, Behavioral Optometry, and TBI fit into the story perfectly, are interesting, well done in layman's terms and accurate. (I was intrigued enough to do a web search after reading the book.) Oh, there's also a couple of yummy recipes included.
I recommend this book and have already started the second book Eye Wit.
