J.B. Garner shows his creative versatility as he introduces us to Junior inspector Vela Redmane: an anthropomorph with nerves of steel , a heart of gold, and a head-turning figure. Although the setting is light years away from that of his series "Three Seconds To Legend" the gritty realism, engaging dialogue, and tight but convoluted plot make this a 'must-read' for Garner fans, and anyone else who loves fantasy or murder mysteriesProduct details

The Songstress Murders The Inspector Redmane Mysteries Book 1 edition by J B Garner Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Believable characters you'll find easy to love (or hate), inhabiting a twisty turny story. Crack in and leave all your perceptions and pre-conceived notions of what it means to be civilized... or even alive... behind. An enjoyable, satisfying read that left me impatient for what comes next.
Vela is a great detective. She takes on Lady Alysa, in more ways than one.
The story is told from the perspectives of various journal entries, documents, and notes. They form a cohesive story, weaving the unique murder mystery in a paranormal setting.
One of my favorite elements was the Moral Compass. When it twinges and spins, what will it say about you?
Good fantasy fiction should, in my opinion, tell you something about the human condition. The Songstress Murders, an Inspector Redmayne Mystery, merges the fantasy and detective genres skilfully and in the process raises some interesting questions about love, sexual attraction and justice.
The cast of characters is led by Vela, a foxy lady with large furry breasts who plays the part of a detective. The creatures in this world are anthropomorphic – fur and feathers, beaks and claws – yet they are not the only inhabitants. Weird animated ghosts, golems, also haunt this realm conjured up by expert magicians. The habitable area is built up, layer upon layer, in vertical cities.
Everything kicks off, as it so often does, in a bar. Someone is found murdered in an upper room and Vela has to investigate. The victim is a gang member, and he has died by magical means.
This introduces two more fascinating characters Lady Alysia Hsu, a student of the occult with a dark past, and a mysterious golem called the Silver Bard. Vela finds herself sexually attracted to them both, which provides an intriguing sub-plot to the hunt for the murderer. Another intriguing aspect of the story is the ‘death-by-music’ thread!
The author has worked his imagination hard to make his fantastic world credible, and it is. Once you are drawn into the action there is plenty to keep you turning the pages, leading to some exciting battles between good and evil – or fairly good and rather evil. Much is relative here, and Vela needs a moral compass to keep her on the straight and narrow.
Fantasy and Sci-Fi are not my usual fare, but I was sufficiently seduced by this novel to continue reading right to the cleverly twisted ending.
I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for this review.
While this is hardly a serious commentary in the typical sci-fi tradition, it is filled with all the fun and literary flair that make for a classic B-Movie that entertains and many, myself includd admit as a guilty pleasure.
J.B. Garner’s tale is a well-woven delightful look at a fantasmic world where gangsters, mages and even a singing Golem create a new normal that provides an escape from the pressures of everyday.
Even embroiled in a murder mystery, the fanciful world Garner creates inside his “The Walled City” is filled with wonder.
Readers following J. I. Vela Redmane, a serious, but life loving detective of the City Watch, that finds herself embroiled in what Garner describes as, “one of the weirdest murder cases ever seen in this place of magic,” will find themselves immersed in a truly imaginative new place where five cities stacked one atop another, provide a surprisingly entertaining look into the world of haves and have-nots.
Redmane and her City Watch may be the only thing that stands between everyday folks and the criminals that would prey upon them, but in a world that mashes up magic, dystopian society and a bit of mystery, even the detective will give readers an almost satirical view of this fantasy world, and perhaps the real world around them.
As he writes in his description “Murder by pleasure, warring (gangs of) gangsters, mysterious mages, and a singing golem are just the start of Redmane's troubles.”
Add in the classic literary love-triangle tangling Vela with both her top suspect and the sorceress who holds all the answers, and the story is complete!
In "TheSongstss Murders", J.B.Garner has created a complete society and environment that slowly draws you into it.
He has an unusual idea for its inhabitants, yet his consistency of character makes them believable. There is no flaw in his narative -- no jarrng modern note -- to take you out of this unique world.
Garner's use of history notes, 'newspaper' quotes and notes from various disciplines is a great way to impart information yet not drag out the plot with unnecessary verbiage. The mystery of the murders keeps the story flowing.
Subtle Insights into the characters are given , such as when one character says to another, "Often all it takes is to know that someone else can see your pain and empathize with it, regardless of the actual words."
I think what really captured my interest was the rhythm of his writing. It seems to intensify one's ability to get lost in the story.
